DEAN'S MESSAGE

The Faculty of Engineering at Dalhousie University is among the finest in Canada. Our name has changed a few times over the past 102 years, but our commitment to excellence in Engineering Education and Research is stronger than ever.

We are proud to claim many of the captains of Canadian industry as our alumni, and I am confident the students who walk our corridors and fill our classrooms today, will be the leaders of tomorrow.

Our goal is to continue to prepare the future generation of Canadian engineers to be innovative leaders, responsible stewards of Canada’s resources, and creative problem solvers.

Engineering education and research cannot be separated.  A strong graduate program is the hallmark of all great Engineering Faculties; and Dalhousie is one of Canada’s leading research intensive Universities. Last year Dalhousie Engineering researchers carried out over $11million dollars of externally funded research. Historically over 50% of our research is carried out either directly or indirectly for the private sector.

We have just completed a long term planning exercise and have identified our strengths and directions for the coming five years. These include the consolidation of our four year program on the Sexton (TECH/TUNS) campus, a renewal of our facilities, an increased emphasis on our hands on approach to engineering education, a renewed focus on research and a commitment to strengthen our links to the greater engineering community.

Over the next few years we will continue this process of self-evaluation, renewal and growth of both our academic programs, staff and our infrastructure.

Our motto is ‘Together we succeed’. I believe strongly in this and I hope that all of you reading this message, our students (past, present, and future), community supporters, and members of the greater Engineering community will all continue to lend a hand in strengthening one of the oldest  and finest engineering schools in Canada.

I firmly believe that with a clear strategy, and with your support, the Dalhousie Faculty of Engineering will continue to grow and change to adjust to the complex demands of the 21st century. Our Faculty of Engineering has tremendous opportunities before it.

In pursuing these opportunities we work with other Dalhousie University faculties and schools, our Alumni, Atlantic and Canadian industry, the Province of Nova Scotia, and the Government of Canada, as we continue to build the reputation of what is already one of Canada’s finest Engineering Faculties. To this end, I encourage you to visit our campus, call or write.
